Our Principle and Value
Integrity and Honesty is our principle and value, which is expressed by the Chinese character 新on the banner of the home page. 新is carved on a red seal, which stands for integrity. It is composed of three Chinese characters, 立 (set up)、木 (wood)、斤(jin=gold), which expresses two stories, Setting up Wood for Integrity, A Promise Worth Thousand Gold (立木为信、一诺千金).
Setting up Wood for Integrity
The story goes back to the year 356 B.C.E.. Shang Yang, a great politician and thinker of the Qin State, proposed a political reform. In order to build up a reputation of integrity to carry out the reform, he set up a wooden post at the south gate of the capital, and posted a notice next to it. The notice promised that whoever moved the wood to the north gate would be rewarded 10 gold (a substantial sum of money at this time). As it was so easy to move the wood and get the reward, the onlookers, disbelieving his promise, did not try it. To add further encouragement, Shang Yang increased reward to 50 gold. Finally, a man came out and moved it to the south gate, successfully performing the deed. Immediately, he was rewarded 50 gold. Shang Yang’s action quickly built up prestige among the people, and his political reform was carried out successfully, thanks to the people's confidence in his integrity. The reform made the Qin State much stronger, and the Qin ultimately went on to unify China.
A Promise Worth Thousand Gold (Promise is debt)
The story goes back to the history of West Han Dynasty, in 202 B.C.E. There was a general named Ji Bu, who had very good reputation for keeping promises. Whatever promises he made, he would keep, even if there was much difficulty in doing so. Therefore there was a popular proverb: Getting 1,000 gold is not as good as getting one promise from Ji Bu.
